Tabu Murnau

Creative Work — Silent Films Readings

F.W. Murnau’s last film is an excellent example of poetic cinema. It was produced in collaboration with Robert J. Flaherty, a mining engineer who would go on to become one of the biggest names in ethnographic cinema. This film explores the theme of taboo through the love between Matahi and the beautiful Reri, who becomes untouchable when she is made a priestess.
